JJ Wrap Up (1)

We are thrilled to announce that Jingle Jam has helped to fund our work to end hunting and whaling.

A whopping £330k was raised for WDC through the Jingle Jam, the world’s biggest charity gaming event. Throughout the two weeks, viewers could purchase the Jingle Jam 2023 Games Collection – containing over 70 games worth over £1100 – kindly donated by games developers and publishers from all over the world.

In just two weeks, the Jingle Jam community raised over £2.7 million for 12 charities, WDC being one of them.

“This incredible donation will fund our urgent projects to stop whaling once and for all, so that whales and dolphins can live safe and free.” Says Sally Ward, Digital partnership manager for WDC. “We’ll now be able to increase our in-country efforts in whaling nations like Japan, Norway, Iceland and The Faroes, it will enable us to send team members to attend International Whaling Commission meetings to help achieve global policy changes. And it will also fund tests on hunted whale and dolphin meat to show its toxicity levels and enable important health-based facts to be shared across hunting nations and persuade consumers to stop buying and eating it.”

“We saw many of our own awesome Games For Waves community members stream, game, bake, run, craft, paint and even cosplay for the whales and we loved every minute of it!” Says Gabby Wheatley, Digital communities officer for WDC.  “Whales are our climate allies - we need them to thrive so the planet can thrive. But they also simply deserve to live safe and free from the threat of harpoons. This support will bring us closer to achieving our goal of stopping this cruel practise once and for all.”

WDC has been incredibly lucky to be a Jingle Jam featured charity since 2016 raising over £2 million for our vital work to protect whales and dolphins across the globe from the many threats they face.

The funds raised over the last seven years have helped fund many vital projects across the globe. From our project to save the critically endangered Atlantic humpback dolphin from extinction – including enabling us to purchase a much-needed vehicle for our field team in Senegal to undertake their beach surveys and community outreach safely and efficiently to our vital work in Scotland reducing entanglement in fishing gear, as well as providing a much-needed boost our education programmes, refurbishing our award-winning visitors centre and funding an urgent report highlighting the devastating impact of chemical pollution in the ocean.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to The Yogscast, Tiltify, Fourth Floor, all the games developers who contributed to the games collection, the Jingle Jam community for watching and donating, and to our incredible Games For Waves community for streaming and fundraising for WDC.
