This June, we launched Games For Waves Week – our first community streaming week celebrating World Oceans Day to raise vital funds and awareness for WDC’s conservation work through games.
Between 8th-15th June we saw a variety of streamers and content creators from our Games For Waves community collectively raise over £8k by playing games and undertaking some hilarious challenges while livestreaming their efforts on Twitch.
These incredible creators undertook a whole host of fun activities and challenges all in aid of the protection of whales and dolphins. From playing some classic ocean titles like Ecco The Dolphin and Subnautica to some more recent hits like Dredge and A Little to The Left, to taking on some serious challenges like eating 100 chicken nuggets, scoffing a load of super sour sweets, wearing a rubber shark mask for hours and attempting to build a massive whale in Minecraft using only the wool taken from 2 in-game sheep?!

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the amazing support from our community streamers.” Says Sally Ward, WDC’s digital partnerships manager. “Games For Waves is our dedicated games brand for anyone and everyone from games publishers and developers to people who like to make and stream content too. We only launched it in February this year and our amazing community has already grown so much in such a short space of time!”
The money raised will help towards our work campaigning for tour operators to end their sale of tickets to captive whale and dolphin attractions. As well as help fund our team to attend and speak up at vital international meetings and global conferences to fight for robust protections to be put in place for whales and dolphins so that they can live safe and free.
A huge thank you to all who supported us during Games For Waves Week including WDC partners Secret Mode and Team17, and streamers ImSeanBean, Meloncolliee, ZionReel, MikePaulVox, eirawave, chilphil, GekTek, BajanShinobi and WDC’s own content officer, TheArtfulGabby.
